The TLX interior is designed and engineered to support the Red Carpet Athlete development theme of the new TLX, providing a high degree of refinement, luxury comfort and technological sophistication while supporting an exhilarating driving experience. High-end premium elements include a soft-touch, one-piece instrument panel upper cover, alloy and woodgrain accents and available leather seating with Milano bolsters.

Technology highlights include next-generation AcuraLink® (on Technology and Advance packages), which delivers a broad spectrum of information and entertainment choices, and Siri™ Eyes Free, which allows the TLX driver to use Apple’s Siri on a compatible iPhone without taking their hands off the steering wheel.

Despite its more compact and nimble exterior footprint, the TLX has the same “tandem distance” – the distance that separates the front and rear rows of seats – as the TL sedan it replaces.

Design and Materials
The new TLX sport sedan interior builds on Acura’s interior styling themes of clean and elegant lines, high-end detailing, and intuitive functionality. A design language called “dual personal structure” divides the space into areas centered on the driver and front passenger, complemented by a wide center stack and a highly functional center console that is easily accessible to each person.

The TLX utilizes Acura’s On-Demand Multi-Information Display, a 2-screen interface with intuitive functionality. The 8-inch color audio/information screen is placed high in the instrument panel, where it’s close to the driver’s sight line. The lower screen, a 7-inch touch screen, eliminates the need for dozens of hard keys, and has contextual menus that make operation simple. The quality of interior materials in the TLX are held to a high standard, with available leather seating, and soft-touch materials throughout.

Driver-Oriented Cockpit
All important systems and controls in the TLX are positioned within easy reach of the driver. Controls for the systems used most frequently — audio, cruise control, Bluetooth® HandsFreeLink®, available satellite-linked Acura Navigation System with Voice Recognition™ and Multi-Information Display — are conveniently positioned on the steering wheel. The main instrumentation is an easy-to-read analog design, supplemented with digital and graphic displays. Typical of Acura interior design, the soft-touch switchgear of the TLX is engineered to deliver a quality feel and positive action. A standard multi-view rearview camera provides a choice of three different views, displayed on the bright, colorful 8-inch audio/information screen. The Technology Package adds Cross Traffic Monitor to the rear camera system, making it easier to maneuver out of parking spots with greater confidence.

Leather-Wrapped Steering Wheel
The leather-wrapped TLX steering wheel incorporates the most commonly used controls, allowing the driver to keep their hands on the wheel. Phone and audio controls are on the left side; cruise control and Multi-Information Display (MID) controls are on the right side. Grades with LKAS and/or ACC (LSF) have controls located on the right side of the steering wheel as well. Tucked out of view but within fingertip reach are a pair of paddle shifters that allow for manual operation of the Sequential SportShift transmission feature.

Instrumentation
The TLX has analog instrumentation with large tachometer and speedometer flanking a Multi-Information Display (MID) that provides a range of information and trip computer functions. The tachometer and speedometer are flanked by an analog coolant-temperature and fuel-level gauge.

Multi-Information Display
The TLX instrument panel provides important vehicle information via a Multi-Information Display (MID) positioned between the tachometer and speedometer. Controls positioned on the right side of the steering wheel allow the driver to cycle the MID display through multiple screens of information from sources including LKAS and ACC and more. The Maintenance Minder™ system alerts the TLX driver of upcoming maintenance needs via the MID and should a fault occur with the vehicle, specific warning information will appear.

Audio/Information Screen
All TLX models feature a bright, full-color 8-inch audio/information screen positioned high in the center stack of the instrument panel. Its high placement puts it close to the driver’s line of sight where it’s easy to see. Besides audio system information, the screen also offers backup camera views when in reverse and access to a range of customizable features.

On-Demand Multi-Use Display™
As in the RLX and MDX, a 7-inch On Demand Multi-Use Display™ (ODMD) touch screen is positioned within easy reach of the driver and front passenger. The touchscreen controls a wide range of features, and with its contextual menus, displays relevant items while minimizing clutter. To simplify use, the screen offers audible and vibratory touch (haptic) feedback — both can be adjusted or shut off based on the owner’s preference. Customizable shortcuts allow the TLX driver to set easy-to-access presets for Places, Phone, Climate and Audio functional categories.

One-Touch Turn Signals
The TLX’s one-touch turn signals provide increased convenience for the driver when making routine lane changes. In addition to normal operation, a quick movement of the turn signal lever (less than one second)0 will cause the turn signals to flash three times.

Electric Parking Brake and Automatic Brake Hold
The Electric Parking Brake (EPB) on all TLX models makes using the parking brake easier. The parking brake is activated by pulling up on a rocker switch located on the center console. To release the parking brake, the driver simply presses on the accelerator pedal (while the seatbelt is buckled) or pushes on the parking brake switch.The TLX also features Automatic Brake Hold, which retains brake pressure when the vehicle is stopped, simplifying driving in heavy traffic or hills. Once the driver activates the system via a switch on the center console, Automatic Brake Hold will maintain brake pressure when the vehicle has come to a stop, even if the driver releases the brake pedal. The TLX then remains stopped — even on a hill — until the driver presses the accelerator pedal.

Integrated Dynamic System (IDS)
The Integrated Dynamics System allows drivers to customize their driving experience through four driver-selectable modes via a button, located near the console-mounted shifter. The modes are ECON, Normal, Sport and Sport+, and are shown in the Multi-Information Display.

Seating
Seating in the TLX is designed for all-day comfort, combined abundant lateral support for aggressive cornering. The available leather seating surfaces, perforated in the center sections and with Milano leather on front seat bolsters, are soft to the touch, with the right amount of surface friction to help keep passengers securely in position while cornering.

The driver’s seat features 10-way power adjustability (8-way power seat plus 2-way power lumbar support). The front passenger seat offers 4-way power adjustment on 4-cyl. models, and 8-way power adjustment on V6-equipped cars.

Heated front seats are standard in the TLX. Electronic control allows for three temperature settings, along with fast warm-up and smooth, precise temperature control. Ventilated and heated front seats are standard in the Advance grade.

The driver’s seat has a two-position memory and an easy entry/exit function that moves the seat 35 mm rearward when the front door is open to increase room for entry and exit.

Specially sculpted front seat seatbacks offer extra legroom for rear seat passengers. The outer seating positions are carefully engineered (complete with side bolsters) to combine solid lateral support with accommodating comfort on long trips. A new 60/40 split-folding rear seatback allows the TLX to accommodate long cargo, or to combine one or two rear seat passengers with long cargo. The seatbacks can be conveniently released via a pair of handles positioned in the trunk area.

Interior Lighting
Efficient driver control carries on after dark with analog instruments that are white backlit with LED lighting and feature high-contrast markings. The gauge package progressively illuminates to give the driver a welcoming feel upon entry. When the door is first opened, the instrument lighting comes to life and then brightens progressively to 100-percent illumination when the ignition is switched on. The illuminated instrument panel then comes alive, indicating that the car is ready to go. At the end of the drive, the instrument lighting dims progressively.

All the interior switches and vent controls are illuminated to make them easy to locate at night, including the switches on all four doors and the steering wheel. The connectivity pocket located in the front of the center console is internally lit, to make the connection of a smart phone easier. In addition to front and rear overhead interior lights and map lights, the TLX also has a complement of low-level interior cabin lighting. Blue ambient lighting in the ceiling illuminates the front center console and the rear flip-down armrest.

Front interior door handle areas are also have LED illumination, and the glove compartment and center armrest compartment are internally illuminated. The front doors have courtesy lights that illuminate when the doors are open. The TLX interior lights feature “theater dimming,” which can be set by the driver to one of several dimming rates via the Multi-Information Display. The trunk has interior lighting, plus the trunk lid has lighting that illuminates the bumper and sill area when the lid is opened.

Center Console and Interior Convenience
The center console blends function and comfort with clean uncluttered layout that includes generous internal storage. A deeply padded armrest covers 269 cu. in. of illuminated internal storage. Compact transmission controls and an electronic parking brake free up space for two large cupholders, along with a connectivity pocket with sliding tray that accommodates a smartphone and cable, while neatly concealing the wiring from view.

A USB port inside the connectivity pocket with sliding tray allows for easy connection of items such as an iPod®, iPhone® or a removable flash drive storage device. The USB port is located alongside a 12-volt power outlet.

Inside the lockable glove compartment is a removable shelf that can help keep contents organized, or can be flipped to free up storage space in the main glove box compartment.

The TLX Owner’s Manual and Navigation System Owner’s Manual are provided on a CD, reducing the size of printed hard copies and freeing up additional space in the glove compartment. A printed Owner’s Guide is provided, however, and the full printed Owner’s and Navigation System manuals are available separately from Acura dealers.

In the rear seating area, a wide fold-down center armrest has a padded top. A dual beverage holder and a small tray sized to accommodate a smartphone are built into the rear armrest top.

Cargo Carrying Versatility
The TLX has a fully finished 13.2-cubic-foot trunk plus underfloor storage for small items. The Advance Package provides additional underfloor space, extending volume to 14.3 cu.-ft. (also available in Base and Technology grades). The trunk is both longer and wider than the TL and has a 15 percent lower lift-over height. 60/40 split-folding rear seatbacks allow the TLX to easily carry longer cargo. The seatbacks can be released and folded independently, using a pair of release handles that are easily accessible from the trunk area.

Electric Trunk Lid Release
There are four ways to open the trunk: 1) by pressing the trunk opener switch located on the driver side instrument panel; 2) with the key fob; 3) with the trunk opener switch located in the middle of the trunk, underneath the trunk lid overhang; and 4) in case the electric trunk release is inoperative, the trunk may be unlocked and opened by using the key stored in the key fob. The trunk’s emergency key cylinder is located beneath a cover near the headrest on the driver’s side rear seatback.

The contents of the trunk can be secured when the TLX is given to a valet parking attendant. A switch located in the glove compartment can disable the electric trunk release feature. The owner then locks the glove compartment and gives the valet the TLX remote fob with the emergency backup key removed. This allows the valet to drive, lock or unlock the vehicle, without having access to the glove box or trunk.

GPS-Linked, Dual-Zone Automatic Climate Control
The TLX has a GPS-linked (when equipped with navigation system) temperature control, dual-zone automatic climate control system that lets the driver and front passenger set temperatures to their individual liking.

To operate the HVAC system, easy-to-read buttons and controls are positioned within convenient reach. The HVAC system can also be controlled by voice command, and additional custom settings can be accessed through the 7-inch On-Demand Multi-Use Display™ interface. The climate control system’s control logic is designed to provide smooth operation with subtle changes in airflow.

With its position-sensing ability, the available GPS navigation system contributes to overall passenger comfort with a 3D solar sensing feature. Based on continuously updated vehicle position information, the navigation system determines the position of the sun relative to the driver and passenger. Combining this information with input from a solar sensor located on top of the instrument panel, the climate control system automatically adjusts the temperature from side to side as needed to compensate for asymmetrical solar heating. Further, on the Advance Package, the heated and ventilated front seats are electronically linked to the climate control system.

Siri™ Eyes Free
Siri™ Eyes Free is standard on the TLX. When the TLX’s Bluetooth® HandsFreeLink® system is paired with a compatible iPhone, Siri Eyes Free allows you to use many of the features of Siri without removing your hands from the steering wheel. A push of approximately two seconds on the steering wheel-mounted “talk” button activates Siri in the TLX. After the Siri chime sounds, the driver can ask a question, set up a calendar entry and more. Siri offers a wide range of capabilities including sending and reading aloud text and email messages, setting alarms and reminders, checking the weather, posting to social media sites and much more. Siri can also find a point of interest, then provide turn-by-turn audio directions when the audio system is set to Bluetooth® audio or iPod mode. The system switches automatically to Bluetooth audio when playing a song or artist.

AcuraWatch® Driver Assist Features
A broad spectrum of AcuraWatch™ driver-assist technologies is offered on the TLX. These systems work together to help the driver maintain greater situational awareness and help make driving easier.

Multi-Angle Rearview Camera and Cross Traffic Monitor
A multi-view rearview camera is standard on all grades. It offers three viewing angles (wide view, normal view and top view). Drivers may select the preferred view according to driving conditions. The rearview image is displayed on the 8-inch color audio/information display, or on the navigation system display (in the same location) on models equipped with navigation. On-screen guidelines help the driver better judge distances, and predictive guidelines help make maneuvering in reverse easier.

The Technology Package adds Rear Cross Traffic Monitor to the TLX. Like the rearview camera, the system is activated when the TLX transmission is placed in Reverse. The system uses blind-spot radar units positioned in each rear corner of the TLX to help detect vehicles approaching from either side, giving the driver improved situational awareness when backing out of parking spots. When a detected vehicle approaches, the system sounds a warning tone and displays a directional warning on the audio/information screen.

Forward Collision Warning (FCW)
The TLX Technology and Advance Packages include a new Forward Collision Warning (FCW) system. When the camera-based system detects a vehicle ahead and determines that collision is possible, it provides the driver with visual (via the MID) and audible alerts to encourage avoidance actions. (The system does not include an automatic braking function).

Collision Mitigation Braking System™ (CMBS™)
Included in the TLX with Advance Package, the new Collision Mitigation Braking System™ (CMBS™) is one of the most sophisticated driver-assistive technologies available. It continually scans traffic conditions ahead of the TLX, alerts the driver of a potential collision (with another vehicle or pedestrian), and then takes emergency autonomous braking action to help reduce the severity of a collision.

Lane Departure Warning (LDW)
The TLX Technology and Advance Packages include Lane Departure Warning (LDW), which provides the driver with visual and audible alerts if the vehicle begins to move out of a detected lane without the turn signal activated. A button on the lower left portion of the instrument panel allows the system to be switched on and off. With the Advance Package version, the driver may select to cancel the audible warning and opt for a steering wheel vibration warning.

Lane Keeping Assist System (LKAS)
The TLX Technology and Advance Packages include the Lane Keeping Assist System (LKAS) to provide a premium driving experience by reducing steering correction movements and driving effort on the highway. LKAS uses a camera to read lane markings to assist the driver in driving in the middle of the lane.

Designed for the U.S. road structure, the system uses a camera mounted on the upper portion of the windshield to identify lane markings (painted lines, Botts’ Dots and Cat Eyes) at speeds between 45 mph and 90 mph. When LKAS senses that the driver is drifting from the middle of a detected lane, the system generates steering torque to assist the driver in maintaining lane position, while also displaying a visual warning in the MID within the instrument panel to alert the driver about a potential lane departure. Compared to lane-keeping systems on other premium vehicles, the TLX’s LKAS operates in a more linear fashion with a more natural feel.

Road Departure Mitigation System
The TLX with Advance Package includes the Road Departure Mitigation (RDM) system which uses a sophisticated camera to read lane markings and roadside shapes. If the system determines that the vehicle is going off the road, it can apply assistive steering torque and apply the brakes to potentially help the vehicle stay on the road.

When the Road Departure Mitigation System determines that the driver is drifting from a detected road, the system provides a visual warning on the Multi-Information Display (MID), along with a warning chime. The e-pretensioner seatbelts tighten to help alert the driver and to prepare for a potential collision. If the driver fails to take appropriate corrective action, the system will then apply assistive steering and brakes in an attempt to keep the vehicle on the road.

Blind Spot Information (BSI)
The TLX Technology and Advance Packages include the Blind Spot Information (BSI) system which uses two radar sensors to continually monitor conditions behind the TLX and alert the driver if another vehicle is detected in close proximity — especially in the blind spot of the driver. The BSI system uses the LED indicators mounted on the front-pillar garnish and an audible warning to alert the driver.

There are two warning levels: 1) If a vehicle is in the driver’s blind spot then the LED indicator on the incoming side illuminates; and 2) If a vehicle is detected and the TLX turn signal is activated, the LED indicator on the incoming side blinks and a buzzer sounds three times. The driver may select to turn off the buzzer or turn off the entire BSI system.

To prevent false alarms while maneuvering at low speed, the BSI system is automatically disabled below approximately 20-mph.

Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) with Low-Speed Follow (LSF)
The TLX with Advance Package features a new generation of Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) with Low-Speed Follow. This vehicle speed and distance control system uses a grille-mounted millimeter-wave radar and a camera in the windshield to monitor the distance between the TLX and the vehicle directly ahead. Like a conventional cruise control system, the ACC system can maintain a preset speed. In addition, by combining radar data with data from speed sensors, ACC can regulate the TLX’s speed to maintain a preset following distance interval. Integration of camera information improves the system’s recognition of vehicles ahead and their relative lane positions for better overall system performance.

The Low-Speed Follow feature can reduce the driver workload in congested traffic by maintaining a selected distance interval, even in stop and go traffic. If a vehicle detected ahead is in range of the system and slows to a stop, the TLX will also come to a stop. When the vehicle ahead moves forward, the vehicle icon on the multi-information display blinks. If the vehicle ahead moves within 3 seconds, the TLX will automatically resume Low-Speed Follow mode. If the vehicle ahead does not move within 3 seconds, the driver must initiate the car to resume Low Speed Follow by a press of the RES/+/SET/ —switch up or down, or with a press of the accelerator pedal.

AcuraLink®
The TLX with Technology or Advance Package features the next generation of AcuraLink®, Acura’s cloud-based connected car system that first launched in 2005. This new generation uses embedded cellular technology built into the TLX, along with the owner’s compatible smartphone and data package, to offer a broad range of convenience, media and available security features. AcuraLink is the new center point for owners for hands-free access to cloud-based services, audio and information, and is designed to keep TLX drivers informed and connected while on the go. AcuraLink is part of the Technology and Advance Packages.

The connectivity required for AcuraLink’s various features is distributed between the TLX’s embedded system (for some of the fee-based features) and the owner’s compatible smartphone and data package (for free features). AcuraLink works with the owner’s compatible smartphone and data package to connect the TLX with music and information resources, internet apps, and more. Owners can use the AcuraLink website to access information or change preferences. AcuraLink allows for Twitter and Facebook access.

AcuraLink Service Levels
AcuraLink provides three available levels of services. The Standard Package is offered at no charge, with the exception surface-street and freeway traffic, which is free for the first three years of ownership. The Connect Package adds a wide range of capabilities (using the embedded phone link) including automated crash notification and an in-vehicle Emergency System that connects you with a live operator with the push of an overhead button. The Premium Package adds Live Concierge operator assistance via the TLX’s embedded cell phone. The Concierge service can send destination information directly to the driver’s TLX navigation system, make reservations on their behalf, and update the user on weather, stocks and much more.

A voice-based capability called Aha™ can be accessed using a compatible smartphone. Aha organizes the TLX owner’s favorite content from the web into personalized on-demand radio stations in the vehicle. Aha is a comprehensive, cloud-based platform optimized for the automotive environment that provides a simple integration point to bring in a wide range of current and future applications into the audio system head unit. Pandora® Interface
The TLX incorporates a wide range of media features to accommodate the ever-changing preferences of customers. All TLX models are designed to provide a convenient interface for Pandora®. Pandora® is a free music service that allows users to open an account online and create up to 100 personalized internet “radio stations” that are based on favorite songs or artists. Users can choose among their stations and listen via computer, and can also download a free smartphone Pandora® app, which allows users listen to the same list of personalized stations via their compatible phone. Although Pandora® is free, phone data charges apply.

An iPhone or compatible Android phones can be connected wirelessly, using Bluetooth® HandsFreeLink® (iPhone is also supported via the Pandora® Audio USB interface). To use Pandora®, the Pandora app is launched on a compatible connected smartphone and the vehicle’s audio source is set to Pandora®. The audio/information screen (or navigation display in vehicles with navigation) and On-Demand Multi-Use Display™ shows Pandora® information and album art, and the audio controls allow listeners to choose from among existing stations, pause, resume, skip forward, and mark a track with “Like” or “Dislike” ratings. Some functionality of the Pandora® app is locked out when using the TLX’s Pandora® interface.

SMS Text Message Function
All TLX models have a standard SMS Text Message function that can read incoming texts aloud over the audio system, and allow the driver to reply with any of six factory preset messages (see below). The system works with SMS-capable cell phones that have an active data plan and the Message Access Profile (MAP), such as the Blackberry, Droid X and others.

Once a compatible phone is paired with the TLX’s Bluetooth® HandsFreeLink® system, the text messaging function is enabled. When the phone receives a text message, an alert appears on the audio/information screen (or navigation screen in vehicles equipped with navigation). Using the audio system controls, the driver can choose to have the message read aloud, can select among the preset reply choices, or can call the sender — all without handling their phone. To help minimize driver distraction, the text of the incoming message is not displayed on-screen while the vehicle is moving.

Bluetooth® HandsFreeLink® Wireless Telephone Interface
Like all Acura vehicles, the TLX has a standard Bluetooth® HandsFreeLink® hands free telephone interface that is designed to work with most Bluetooth®-enabled mobile phones. Bluetooth® is a radio frequency-based technology that allows portable devices (such as mobile cellular telephones, PDAs, and laptop computers) to communicate wirelessly. The TLX’s HandsFreeLink® system is compatible with Bluetooth®-enabled cellular phones that have the Hands Free Profile (HFP). After the driver completes a one-time pairing process, the TLX can communicate wirelessly and securely with the driver’s cell phone when it is within approximately 10 feet of the car. The phone needs to be on, but can be stored in a pocket, briefcase, purse, or anywhere inside the TLX cabin — thus there is no need to worry about where to place the cellular telephone.

Bluetooth® HandsFreeLink® allows the driver to send or answer telephone calls without removing their hands from the steering wheel. When a call comes in, the number of the incoming caller is displayed on the Multi-Information Display (MID) located in the instrument cluster. In addition, the phone ring tone is played over the audio system. If the driver chooses to answer the phone call, a press of the steering wheel-mounted “Pick up” button mutes the audio system and the incoming caller is heard over the TLX’s audio system speakers. Working with an overhead array microphone, the HandsFreeLink® system helps cancel “echo effect” and reduces background noise to improve the transmission quality of the driver’s speech.

To send a call hands-free, the TLX driver can dial the number by voice, again using fingertip controls mounted on the steering wheel to activate the system. The driver also can store frequently called numbers in the system’s memory using unique voice tags. Up to six different compatible mobile phones can be registered with the TLX’s Bluetooth® HandsFreeLink® system.

Audio/Connectivity Feature Summary

Acura 7-Speaker Premium Audio System
The TLX features the Acura Premium Audio System, which includes a single-disc CD player, AM/FM/XM (plus HD RadioTM on Tech and Adv. Packages) and delivers detailed, well-balanced sound to all seating positions The system’s 7 speakers are located throughout the TLX cabin f or optimum sound quality. A pair of tweeters are positioned near the A-pillars and a total of four 6.7-inch speakers are placed in the front doors and the rear parcel shelf. Finally, an 8-inch subwoofer is located in the center of the rear deck.

In addition to traditional source inputs, the TLX is fitted with a USB port that allows for easy connectivity to items such as an iPod® or iPhone® along with a removable flash drive storage device containing WMA, MP3 or AAC format music. The USB port is located in the connectivity pocket with sliding tray, which is positioned at the front of the center console.

Acura/ELS Studio® 10-Speaker Premium Audio
The TLX Technology and Advance Packages feature the Acura/ELS Studio® Premium Audio System, engineered specifically for the TLX by legendary recording engineer Elliot Scheiner to recreate the emotional experience you feel when you enjoy a live performance. The system features high power amplification (490W peak output) and advanced speaker technology. It includes a single-disc CD player, AM/FM/HD/XM/HDD and delivers accurate, well-balanced sound throughout the TLX cabin.

The system’s 10 speakers are precisely located throughout the cabin to optimize the listening experience. A pair of ELS tweeters are positioned near the A-pillars, and an ELS 3.1-inch driver is located high in the center of the instrument panel. A total of four 6.7-inch ELS speakers are placed in the front doors and on either side of the rear parcel shelf. Each rear door has a 3.1-inch ELS driver and an 8-inch subwoofer is located in the center of the rear deck.

XM® Radio
XM® Radio is a standard feature with all TLX audio systems and it provides more than 165 channels of digital programming with near CD-quality sound. The XM® signal is beamed to two broadcast satellites positioned in geostationary orbit above Earth. The beams from these two broadcast satellites combine to span the entire continental United States and some of Canada.

XM® Radio programming includes channels devoted to music, sports, talk, traffic, weather, children’s programming and entertainment. Of the more than 165 XM® channels, 72 are commercial-free. When the TLX’s audio system plays XM® Radio, the Audio/Information screen (or navigation display in vehicles with navigation) displays the current category, station song title, or artist’s name, while the current category and station are also displayed on the On-Demand Multi-Use Display™. A complimentary 3-month subscription to the XM® Radio service is included with purchase of a new TLX, and customers are able to continue the service or cancel any time afterwards.

HD Radio™
TECH and ADV TLX models feature HD Radio™. HD Radio technology converts the traditional analog radio broadcast to digital and provides advanced audio and data features that enhance the listening experience. Sound quality is radically improved, and unlike satellite radio, HD Radio is free.

Instead of sending out one analog signal, HD stations send out a bundled signal — both analog and digital. Because it is digital, textual data such as traffic, stock info and song titles can be sent out, as well. Unlike conventional radio, HD Radio stations broadcast extra channels, which are called HD2/HD3. These added channels offer TLX owners a universe of additional choices.

Hard Disk Drive (HDD) Audio
TECH and ADV TLX audio systems feature a Hard Disk Drive (HDD) that can copy music tracks from pre-recorded CDs, enabling customers to store many CDs worth of music on-board for easy access. The system will not copy music from burned CDs or from USB flash drives. The audio system in the TLX and TLX V-6 offers 15GB of storage space. Based on music files measuring an average size of 4.2MB per song at a 128kbps bit rate, approximately 3,500 songs can be loaded into the 15GB system (approximately 175 CDs).

The HDD-based system records music at 6-times that of the original music track time. Two recording quality settings (192 kbps or 128 kbps) are available. The automatic-recording default setting can be changed to manual if desired.

The audio system can display information about the music tracks, such as artist names and song titles using the Gracenote® database in the system software. This database can be periodically updated to reflect newly released music. Gracenote updates can be downloaded by TLX owners at automobiles.acura.com in the Ownerlink section (up to four updates per year maximum). The updates can then be loaded onto a CD-R or onto a USB thumb drive, which in turn can be used to update the TLX audio system. Even without a Gracenote update, newly released audio tracks will play on the sound system, without accompanying text information on genre, artist, album name and track name.

Song by Voice®
Song by Voice® is standard with the Technology and Advance Packages. From most navigation screens, the driver can simply press the TALK button on the steering wheel. With so much audio content potentially available on the HDD or from an iPod, TLX engineers set out to make it easy to find content. So drivers can simply give a voice command, such as “Play song ‘Danny Boy,'” and the system will automatically begin playback. Song by Voice also lets the driver choose music by artist, album, track name, genre, playlist and even composer.

System Operation
The TLX’s available Acura Satellite-Linked Navigation System uses GPS technology and a 100-GB hard-disk drive based (HDD) system to provide drivers with turn-by-turn guidance to their chosen destination. The system includes surface street traffic data and provides coverage in many areas within the U.S., allowing the driver to choose faster, less congested routes. The system offers a new level of convenience, with the new generation of AcuraLink. Owners can send a destination to the vehicle in advance of trip using AcuraLink (with the optional AcuraLink Connect Package), or while on the road via the AcuraLink Concierge operator (with the optional AcuraLink Premium Package) or the interactive voice response system (with the AcuraLink Connect Package).

The TLX navigation system features an 8-inch high-resolution WVGA (800×480 pixel) backlit color display that takes the place of the audio/information display in non-navigation models. The system can be controlled by voice, or with a convenient interface dial. This new technology allows the voice-activation system to respond to casual command phrases that require less user familiarization, in addition to the previous capability of being able to understand spoken city and street names. For example, a voice request for “Radio 98.3 FM” can now be spoken in approximately a dozen different ways ranging from “change the radio station to 98.3” to just saying “98.3 FM.” This logic applies to audio functionality of the audio/information screen. The navigation system can also be controlled by voice with conventional navigation commands like, “Find nearest Chinese restaurant” or “Find nearest ATM.”

The audio system is automatically muted when the “Talk” button is pressed. The voice-recognition technology allows the driver to simply speak city the full address aloud, and the system responds by displaying the matches available in the database. Points of interest on the map (such as restaurants or grocery stores) can be displayed with brand logo icons, or the system can provide turn-by-turn navigation — all by voice command. The massive point-of-interest (POI) database includes telephone numbers that can be dialed by using the Bluetooth® HandsFreeLink® system when the driver’s cellular telephone is connected to the system.

The Acura Navigation System uses Global Positioning Satellites (GPS) in combination with detailed information from the vehicle’s mapping system to pinpoint its location and to provide a host of useful mapping and route guidance features. The antenna can utilize up to 12 satellites from a network of 24 global positioning satellites. If the antenna is obstructed by a tunnel, a parking garage or a tall building, an internal gyroscopic system and a speed sensor track the location of the vehicle so that the map information remains current and reliable. The vehicle clock is independently controlled by GPS data, so when time zones are crossed while driving, the clock will automatically set itself to the current time.

The TLX’s navigation screen can display regularly updated traffic information including traffic flow, incidents and construction on freeways, and for the first time, on surface streets. The information is from Probe Traffic, a system that tracks the movements of participating Acura (and other) vehicles to generate up-to-date flow information. Participants opt into the Probe Traffic system to receive flow information, which is anonymous and scrubbed of any personal information. The flow information is transmitted via the TLX’s embedded cellular data link and is graphically displayed on the navigation system.

The system can automatically recalculate a “detour” route and display a pop-up box signifying the route change, when traffic congestion or road incidents are detected along the selected drive route. Alternately, the driver can recalculate a route in manual mode simply by selecting “TRAFFIC INCIDENTS” from the Map Info menu followed by selecting the “AVOID” command relevant to an incident.

The navigation system can also suggest scenic routes based on the National Scenic Byways and All-American Roads guide. The U.S. Secretary of Transportation recognizes certain roads as All-American Roads or National Scenic Byways based on one or more archeological, cultural, historic, natural, recreational and scenic qualities. Scenic-route information for 126 routes can be accessed from inside the “Information” menu and is displayed on the map as a green-and-red segmented line.

Active Noise Control (ANC) and Active Sound Control (ASC)
Key contributors to the TLX’s quiet, refined interior are Active Noise Control (ANC) and Active Sound Control (ASC). The two systems are comprised of dual overhead microphones, an ANC/ASC electronic processor, and the audio system’s speakers. ASC/ANC operates whenever the engine is running, even if the audio system is turned off.

ANC is designed to reduce low frequency sound in the cabin caused mainly by the roughness of the road surface. The overhead microphones pick up sound waves and send them to the ANC/ASC processor, which creates and sends a precisely timed “reverse phase” audio signal to a special amplifier. In turn, the amplifier drives the door speakers to cancel the original noise signal.

ASC is a related technology designed to improve the engine sound quality by making the sound pressure level more linear as the engine revs increase. Typically, engine noise doesn’t increase in a linear way with rising revs; instead there can be many resonances that create peaks and valleys in the sound pressure level and an uneven sound. ASC helps smooth out the engine sound by creating a same-phase or reverse-phase sound signal as needed and sending it to the speakers. Though the system offers benefits from idle to redline, it makes the largest difference in the range between 1400 and 2400 rpm (V6) and 1000 and 1800 rpm (4-cyl.), where it lowers the sound pressure level with a reverse-phase audio signal.

ASC is part of the Integrated Dynamics System (IDS). When the IDS is in ECON or Normal mode, the ASC system is tuned for a smooth, unobtrusive engine sound. When the IDS is switched to Sport or Sport+, the TLX’s interior engine sound takes on a more aggressive note.

Smart Entry Keyless Access System
The TLX features Acura’s Smart Entry with Push Button Start. The Smart Entry system lets the TLX owner gain access to the vehicle without having to operate the key fob or conventional key. The Smart Entry remote has a unique digital identity and the TLX can be unlocked when the driver grabs one of the front door handles while the remote is in his/her possession. When carrying the fob (or if all doors are unlocked), the trunk can be opened by pressing a button located on the TLX’s rear fascia.

Once the driver has opened the door and is seated, the Smart Entry system allows the TLX to be started by pushing the Engine Start/Stop button positioned on the instrument panel. When leaving the car, a press of the soft-touch button on the exterior door handle locks all the doors. Alternatively, pressing the Lock button on the Smart Entry remote will also simultaneously lock all doors.

Smart Entry also features a unique “quick vent” feature. When the operator depresses the “unlock” button on the keyless remote for two seconds after unlocking the doors, the system lowers all four windows and opens the power moonroof to quickly vent built-up interior heat. In addition, by inserting the built-in key into the driver’s door lock and holding the key in the “lock” position, all open windows can be simultaneously raised.

Preferences
The Acura TLX comes with two keyless remotes that can be set with a unique preference to accommodate the preferences of two different drivers. The available preferences include driver seat and mirror positions, along with select HVAC functions. Other preferences include turning entry lights on or off, audio system pre-sets, air conditioning preferences, and navigation system settings. In the event both owners use the car at the same time, the TLX will recognize the keyless remote that approaches the driver’s door first.

TLX Accessories
A line of Genuine Acura Accessories was developed simultaneously with the TLX to provide personalization for the Acura owner. Like all Genuine Acura Accessories, the TLX accessories are covered by a 4-year/50,000-mile limited warranty if installed by the dealer at the time of vehicle purchase.
