Four reasons the 2018 Mustang GT is the fastest yet

The numbers are finally in. Mustang fans, we’re about to make your day – in about four seconds flat.

As is tradition, the 2018 Ford Mustang GT sets a new speed standard. Equipped with a redesigned 5.0-litre V8 with an available 10-speed SelectShift transmission, the 2018 Mustang GT comes with a whopping 460 horsepower and 420 lb.-ft of torque.

The latest iteration of the fan favourite Mustang is not only the most advanced and customizable, it’s also the fastest ever, reaching 0-to-100 km/h in less than four seconds with the new Drag Strip mode activated. It’s safe to say this pony’s got gumption. (P.S. – That’s faster than a Porsche 911)

Four seconds, four factors

Courtesy of Carl Widmann, Mustang chief engineer, here are four reasons (one for each second it takes to reach 100 km/h) that this year’s Mustang GT is able to accelerate so quickly!

Redesigned with speed in mind: Mustang’s 5.0-litre V8 engine

The 2018 Mustang GT’s 5.0-litre V8 engine is redesigned, featuring dual-fuel, high-pressure direct injection and low-pressure port fuel injection technology for improved efficiency and power. That means hardier low-end torque, high-RPM power and greater fuel efficiency. Give this rocket a launch and you’ll see what we mean.

Acceleration’s best friend: Drag Strip mode

Thanks to innovations made developing the Ford GT’s drive mode technology, the 2018 Mustang GT’s drive modes enable faster speed and better performance. Drag Strip mode, one of five driver-selectable modes, is designed to offer maximum acceleration for straight driving. With Drag Strip mode selected, engine torque doesn’t drop on the gearshift, meaning you get peak engine torque and horsepower without ever giving up time or power shifting gears.

Faster, easier shifting: 10-speed SelectShift transmission

With the new 10-speed SelectShift transmission, it’s all about delivering higher power for acceleration. Uniquely tuned for each of the Mustang’s drive modes, this Ford-patented tech is optimized for ratio progression, making for improved accuracy, and quicker shift times.

Traction action: Michelin Pilot Sport 4 S tires

With the custom-designed Michelin Pilot Sport 4 S tires, the Mustang GT sticks to the track like Velcro. You’ll need to grab the new Performance Pack to take advantage of this traction-boosting technology.

The EcoBoost-equipped pony isn’t hurting for power either, featuring 310 horsepower and 350 lb.-ft. of torque. With Drag Strip mode engaged, along with the Performance Package and the available 10-speed automatic transmission, the 2018 EcoBoost-equipped Mustang is able to reach 0-to-100 km/h in less than five seconds.
