OSHAWA, ON (May 11, 2016) — GM Canada has committed $100,000 to the Canadian Red Cross to aid communities affected by the Alberta fires and the ongoing relief efforts.  GM Canada employees, dealers, distributors and GM Financial employees are also providing individual support to the Canadian Red Cross.

“On behalf of all of the extended GM Canada family, we admire and support the resiliency and determination of those individuals and families affected by the devastating fires in Alberta,” said Steve Carlisle, president and managing director, General Motors of Canada.  “We commend the efforts of everyone who have come to their aid and demonstrated overwhelming compassion to those in need.”

Safety is GM’s priority and throughout the evacuation, OnStar Crisis Assist was made available for all OnStar customers in the Fort McMurray area. OnStar Crisis Assist service is designed to help and assist customers in severe weather conditions or a crisis by providing OnStar emergency services to those in impacted areas.

The Canadian Red Cross is responding to meet the needs of individuals, families and entire communities who have been impacted by massive wildfires in Alberta. Here in Canada and overseas, the Red Cross stands ready to help people before, during and after a disaster. As a member of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement – which is made up of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, the International Committee of the Red Cross and 190 national Red Cross and Red Crescent societies – the Canadian Red Cross is dedicated to improving the lives of vulnerable people by mobilizing the power of humanity in Canada and throughout the world.

Canadians wishing to help are encouraged to make a financial donation to the Alberta Fires Appeal online at www.redcross.ca, by calling 1-800-418-1111 or by contacting their local Canadian Red Cross office.
