Honda Automobiles: 2015 Honda CR-V

Overview
Over 60 changes have been made to the 2015 CR-V’s body to increase safety performance through better energy absorption, enhance dynamic performance with increased body stiffness, and improve noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) through enhanced sealing, sound insulation and body tuning. The 2015 CR-V is slightly longer than the previous model due to increases in the front and rear.

Key New Body Features

  • Improved Advanced Compatibility Engineering™ (ACE™) body-structure
  • Increased body rigidity
  • Increased door sealing
  • Enhanced NVH abatement
  • Length increased by 1.1 inches

Advanced Compatibility Engineering™ (ACE™)
The 2015 CR-V utilizes Honda’s proprietary Advanced Compatibility Engineering™ (ACE™) body-structure technology to enhance occupant protection and crash compatibility in frontal collisions. ACE utilizes a network of connected structural elements to distribute crash energy more evenly throughout the front of the vehicle. This enhanced frontal crash energy management helps to reduce the forces transferred to the passenger compartment and can help to more evenly disperse the forces transferred to other vehicles in a crash.

Unlike most conventional designs that direct frontal crash energy only to the lower load-bearing structures in the front end, ACE actively channels frontal crash energy to both upper and lower structural elements, including the floor frame rails, side sills and A-pillars. By creating specifically engineered “pathways” that help distribute these frontal impact forces through a greater percentage of the vehicle’s total structure, ACE can more effectively direct those forces around and away from the passenger compartment to help limit cabin deformation and further improve occupant protection. And like other Honda models, the CR-V has an impact-absorbing front body design to help attenuate energy in the event of a frontal collision with a pedestrian.

The numerous body structure improvements are expected to help the CR-V achieve top crash-test ratings including a TOP SAFETY PICK+ rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), with a GOOD rating in the small overlap frontal crash test, along with a five-star Overall Vehicle Score from the NHTSA . The body improvements also increase torsional rigidity by 5.7 percent and bending stiffness by 2.7 percent.

Exterior Dimensions
The fundamental goodness of the 2014 CR-V’s packaging is retained for the 2015 model, with ample room for five, including generous headroom of up to 39.9 inches and passenger volume of up to 104.1 cu-ft. The comfort provided by these interior dimensions is accomplished in concert with an aerodynamically efficient body design. The 2015 CR-V rides on the same 103.1-inch wheelbase as the previous model but is 1.1 inches longer at 178.3 inches. Width is the same as the 2014 CR-V, at 71.6 inches, but track is slightly wider for all trims, beginning with 62.1 inches front/62.2 inches rear for the LX FWD. Height remains the same at 64.7 inches for the FWD models and 65.1 for AWD models.

Noise mitigation
Many changes made to the 2015 CR-V’s body helped reduce noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) by increasing body rigidity. Door sealing was also improved to reduce noise intrusion. The door seal thickness was doubled. To further absorb sound and insulate the cabin, the coverage and thickness of sound-absorbing material was increased, including a full-coverage sound insulating carpet. The torque-rod engine mount system helps to reduce idle vibration and mid- and high-frequency engine noise during acceleration. These efforts result in superior cruising quietness.
