Nissan: 1971 Datsun 1200 Coupe (B110)

Known as the Nissan Sunny in its homeland, the Datsun B110 was a durable compact designed to compete with the Toyota Corolla globally.

With an MSRP below $1,900 and fuel economy of 38 mpg, the Datsun 1200 was a popular choice for the frugal American from 1971-1973. McPherson struts and disc brakes in front gave it decent handling for the price.

This car is representative of the Sunny’s second generation. With the emergence of the Datsun 510 in 1968, the 240Z in 1970, and the Datsun 1200 in 1971, Nissan Motor Company’s die was cast as a formidable import player in the United States. The B110 would give way to the updated B210 in 1973, sending the company’s sales numbers on an upward trajectory that would continue to the present day.
