VW Sunday Sessions in New York

The new season of VW Sunday Sessions at New York’s MoMA PS1 kicks off with the generous support of Volkswagen Group of America. Entering into its fifth season, this acclaimed series of events in the VW Dome offers a platform where avant-garde art forms combine with current social topics.

The vanguard artists that will be presenting their interpretation of topical themes at the VW Sunday Sessions draw from diverse mediums such as music, dance, film, performances and panels. This season marks the fifth year of Volkswagen’s sponsorship and, with a total of 15 events taking place between October 23, 2016 and April 9, 2017, it will offer the public another round of thought-provoking encounters.

The centrepiece of the series is the VW Dome, which has been erected since 2012 on a regular basis in the inner court of MoMA PS1 with the support of Volkswagen Group of America. Open between October and April, this compelling cupola has given the museum ample space to develop a wealth of new events, inviting an ever-larger public to interact with contemporary art forms.

The new season of the VW Sunday Session starts out with a performance by British artist Mark Leckey at the opening of his exhibition Containers and Their Drivers exploring the touch points between art and popular culture. Other events will showcase the work of the French-Moroccan choreographer Latifa Laâbissi, the New York multimedia artist India Salvor Menuez and Berlin-based Hannah Black.

“The VW Sunday Sessions are a forum offering visitors of MoMA PS1 the chance to encounter contemporary art embedded in a social context. This fosters an interesting and novel understanding of creative impulses and energies. It also reflects our efforts to establish art as a vital part of many people’s lives”, comments David Geanacopoulos, Senior Executive Vice President for Public Affairs, Volkswagen Group of America, Inc.

Since 2011, Volkswagen Group of America has supported the work of MoMA and MoMA PS1 within the framework of an ongoing partnership. So far, more than 35 projects such as exhibitions, panel discussions, concerts and creative workshops have been realized thanks to Volkswagen. Furthermore, Volkswagen Group of America is involved as a lead partner for the educational programs of MoMA, in order to promote art and culture within the area of education and strengthen individual creativity, inspiration and innovative spirit. This collaboration has allowed MoMA´s interactive online educational offerings to be effectively expanded. This partnership is also one of the core elements of Volkswagen Group’s international commitment to the arts and culture, reflecting its engaged social responsibility.
