2013 Audi Summer Concerts “In foreign lands”

This year, the Audi Summer Concerts will use a multifaceted palette of vocal, chamber and symphonic works to take its audience on a musical adventure through foreign lands. The program revolves around the leitmotiv “In foreign lands.” It is not unusual for composers to leave home at some time in their lives either voluntarily or under duress. Not only does this type of experience impact their lives, it can also have a tremendous influence on their music. Which is why the Audi Summer Concerts this year will present works by exiled composers such as Erich Wolfgang Korngold (opening concert) and Béla Bartók, both of whom fled to the United States to escape fascism. Vocal ensemble German Baroque composer Heinrich Schütz, who translated the Venetian polyphonic he experienced during trips to Italy into his own musical language, will be interpreted by Cantus Cölln. Another component of the musical theme “In foreign lands” are works of composers from far-away lands such as South Africa’s Astor Piazzolla and Alberto Ginastera. This year’s commission by the Audi Summer Concerts and the Turku Music Festival went to Finnish composer Eero Hämeenniemi, whose work written for Indian flute, string quartet and Mridangam, “Priya”, combines the influence of his Finnish upbringing with the music of India.

The festival features top musicians in their fields. Klaus Florian Vogt, Emily Magee and the Staatsphilharmonie Nürnberg under the direction of Patrick Lange will open the Audi Summer Concerts. Internationally renowned violin virtuoso David Garrett will perform the Brahms’ Violin Concerto with the Orchestra Sinfonica di Milano Giuseppe Verdi under the direction of John Axelrod. To celebrate Richard Wagner’s 200th birthday, the brass ensemble Mnozil Brass will present their own version of Wagner’s story of the gods in its program “HOJOTOHO  – A Wagnerian Brass Comedy.” Other highlights include a concert by world-class cellist Jan Vogler and, during the final concert, by the Teresa Carreño Youth Orchestra of Venezuela. This young orchestra is part of the music education program “El Sistema”, which has provided some 400,000 underprivileged Venezuelan children a musical education since it was first founded in 1975. The performance by the 200-strong youth orchestra is made possible by a guest appearance of the Salzburg Festival.

There are also many up-and-coming and already very successful musicians performing during the 2013 Audi Summer Concerts. Cellist and winner of the 2010 ARD International Music Competition Julian Steckel, who was born in 1982, will perform with his accompanist Paul Rivinius at Castle Leitham. Twenty-nine-year-old multi-percussionist Martin Grubinger will perform for a second time at the Audi Summer Concerts, this time presenting a program of South African music. The joint concerts of the Audi Youth Choir Academy and Berlin’s Brandt Brauer Frick Ensemble will push traditional boundaries by performing pieces ranging from an evening of romantic choral music to club music all performed on classical instruments.

Last year, as an additional offering for young visitors, Audi launched a concert series called “Listen!” The series continues this summer with three events. In addition to a “Musical trip around the world,” which will be performed in the ceremonial hall of the Ingolstadt municipal theater, and performed by TV moderator Malte Arkona and the Georgian Chamber Orchestra Ingolstadt, the musical “Gustav’s wonderful journey” will be performed twice at the Audi museum mobile. The Georgian Chamber Orchestra Ingolstadt is also presenting a very special concert. In cooperation with the city of Ingolstadt and UNICEF Germany, the Audi Summer Concerts will host a charity concert to mark the completion of the Ingolstadt-UNICEF “City of Children” year. At the same time, UNICEF Germany will be celebrating its 60th Birthday with an internationally known UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador. In addition, the Georgian Chamber Orchestra will perform “Noche Latina” during the well-known, classical open-air concert held in Klenzepark. The second open-air concert will feature the Audi Wind Ensemble. Admission to both concerts is free.

Culture has many facets – that’s why, for the first time, an art exhibition – “Jürgen Partenheimer. The visit” – will run in parallel to the Audi Summer Concerts. The exhibition, which is a collaboration of the four museums of the “Pinakothek der Moderne”, will present art from the Bavarian State Painting Collections at Audi sites across Germany. Entrance is free to visitors of the Audi Summer Concerts for the duration of the festival.
