Acura Automobiles: Acura Announces May 2011 Sales Results

In a month hit hard by production and parts shortages as a result of the earthquake in Japan, Acura total vehicle sales for May were 9,000 down 17.1 percent based on Daily Selling Rate* (DSR). The MDX luxury SUV once again led Acura sales with 3,824 units sold, up 1.9 percent* compared to May 2010. Year-to-date sales for Acura reached 51,972, up 3.4 percent.

“May sales are on par with what we expected due to the lingering effects of parts and production shortages resulting from the devastating March 11 earthquake in Japan,” said John Mendel, executive vice president of sales for American Honda Motor Co., Inc. “We are confident that sales will rebound as our North American plants reach 100 percent production capacity for most models in August.”

The RDX crossover SUV was Acura’s next best selling light truck with 1,042 units sold, down 25.4 percent. Total light truck sales for Acura tallied 4,994 units, down 8.0 percent compared to May 2010.

The TL performance luxury sedan led Acura car sales with 2,197 units sold, down 18.6 percent. The TSX sports sedan (along with the new TSX Sport Wagon) was Acura’s next best selling car with 1,751 units sold, down 32.4 percent. Total car sales for Acura were 4,006, down 26.2 percent.

*The daily selling rate (DSR) is calculated with 24 selling days for May 2011 and 26 days for May 2010.
Year-to-date sales based on 126 days for both 2011 and 2010.
