Awesome is now affordable: The Jetta GLI offers luxury at a surprisingly low price

“Luxuriate” is a real world—we looked it up. It means “to indulge oneself luxuriously.” You know what else is a real world? Overpay. (We’re pretty sure you already know what that one means.) Fortunately, the 2012 Volkswagen Jetta GLI combines luxury, affordability and fun. What more could you want?

The first thing you’ll notice about the all-new Jetta GLI is that it has a sportiness that goes beyond appearance. Up front, it boasts a honeycomb front grille, vertical fog lights and a faux splitter, while smoked taillight lenses and dual exhausts bring up the rear. Below, there’s an independent rear suspension that ensures a smooth ride. But it’s when the hood is lifted that its true sportiness is revealed. The GLI is powered by VW’s award-winning 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, complete with 200 horsepower and 207 pound-feet of torque, which is more than eager to get those 17-inch alloy wheels moving quickly.

The Jetta GLI also takes a cue from its super sporty sibling, the GTI, with its racing-inspired flat-bottomed steering wheel. The multi-function wheel features integrated controls and is wrapped in perforated leather so it even feels luxurious. While you’re behind the wheel, enjoy the ample legroom while your passengers make the most of all the rear seat space.

But the most comforting feature of all is one that won’t even make it off the dealer’s lot: the price tag. With an MSRP of only $23,495, the Jetta GLI may be the first luxury car to induce reverse sticker shock. So go ahead—luxuriate. You’ll be glad you did.
