OSHAWA – General Motors continues to expand its career re-entry program through the launch of
Take 2 in Canada. The program provides training, professional development and networking opportunities for experienced professionals returning to the workforce after taking a break from their career for two or more years. The positions will be geared at engineering professionals and will be for placement at its new Canadian Technical Centre in Markham, Ontario.

“We are in the midst of hiring up to 700 engineers to support the expansion of our engineering and software work in Canada and the Take 2 program is a great way to reach out to experienced talent that can help us develop the future of personal mobility in Canada,” said Adam Kooy, Take 2 program manager for Canada. “The Take 2 program will provide candidates with the skills and tools to ensure their success with the help of managers and mentors.”

The Take 2 program which began in Michigan in early 2016, offers candidates paid 12-week positions that run from mid-September through early December. Upon successful completion candidates will receive full-time permanent offers of employment.

Wendy Kwiecinski, GM safety forensic engineer, rejoined GM as part of the first Take 2 cohort. After taking an extended break from her career, she was ready to reenter the workforce, but was concerned that her skills were outdated. “Through the support of the other participants who had also stepped away for a while, the Take 2 program helped me realize that the skills I acquired during my break, while different, are just as useful as those I would have developed had I remained in the workforce,” said Kwiecinski.

“I congratulate GM on this initiative as these re-entry programs offer a powerful confidence-building new pathway for individuals who have an engineering degree to return into the workforce and contribute their knowledge and talents,” said Mary A. Wells, Ontario Network of Women in Engineering (ONWiE) Chair, and Associate Dean Outreach, Faculty of Engineering and Professor of Materials Engineering, Department of Mechanical and Mechatronics Engineering, University of Waterloo.
