Oshawa, Ontario (March 18, 2016) – Today, GM Canada president and managing director Steve Carlisle toured Western in London, Ontario as part of the Company’s efforts to find and drive innovation for the future of the automobile.

Carlisle spoke with Western students about GM and the auto sector’s rapid move toward an automotive future where vehicles are electric, connected, autonomous and shared. Carlisle said, “I was really impressed with the talent and capability at Western. We will need a new range of advanced engineering and technical skills as the auto sector transforms. It’s clear to me that we have that here in Canada.”

Carlisle toured Western’s Fraunhofer Project Centre for Composites Research (FPC), as well as the Faculty of Engineering, and spoke to an audience of students to tell GM’s story of innovation, the Oshawa Engineering Centre mandate and the recruitment of the best Canadian talent.

“Western is home to several leading research programs that offer significant advantages to companies operating throughout the automotive sector and its supply chains,” says Western Engineering Dean, Andrew Hrymak. “By developing lighter materials and battery systems, and improving manufacturing processes, these programs offer novel, big-thinking ideas to sustain the future of the automotive industry.”

FPC engineers and research scientists develop, test, validate and characterize new lightweight materials and advanced manufacturing processes at an industrial scale.

The Canadian Engineering Centre is currently hiring more than 100 software and controls engineers to support a new mandate related to “connected car” systems, environmental and urban mobility solutions.
