Nissan: Nissan Congratulates the Government of Quebec for its Enhanced Drive Electric Program

MONTREAL, Quebec – As the manufacturer of the best-selling all-electric vehicle in history, Nissan Canada congratulates the Government of Quebec on its recently announced pilot project for used electric vehicles, which provides cash incentive for Quebec residents who purchase a previously-owned electric vehicle. This marks the first time Canadians have the option of purchasing a previously owned fully-electric vehicle, while still benefitting from a provincial incentive.

As of April 1st 2017, when the new program goes into effect, the all-electric Nissan LEAF™ is eligible for the full $8,000 incentive in Quebec and $4,000 on pre-owned Nissan LEAFs that have not been registered in Quebec. Those who acquire used EVs will be eligible to get a rebate for purchasing home charging stations.

Nissan will be launching a program to support the pilot project for used electric vehicles in the coming weeks.

The pilot project for used electric vehicles will contribute to the Quebec Government’s objective of increasing the number of electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles in the province to 100,000 units by 2020.

Project participants will consist of the first 1,000 applicants who acquire a used fully-electric vehicle that meets the following criteria:

  • Is between three and four years old
  • Comes from outside Quebec
  • Was bought or leased from an authorized dealer
  • Comes with a warranty of at least three years or 40,000 km, and has been inspected and certified by an automobile manufacturer

Having transformed the performance, practicality and public perception of EVs around the world since the LEAF’s launch in 2010, Nissan remains the undisputed leader in EV technology.

“We are thrilled with the Government of Quebec’s changes to its Drive Electric Program. This solidifies the province as a leader in the field of electric mobility – by extending the accessibility and practicality of electric vehicles,” says Joni Paiva, president of Nissan Canada Inc. “We know that Nissan LEAF owners love the benefits of driving electric – zero spending on gas, low maintenance, quick acceleration and the feeling of driving an environmentally friendly vehicle. These ownership benefits will be experienced by even more customers thanks to the pilot project for used electric vehicles – ultimately helping move electric vehicles toward becoming the preferred source of mobility in Quebec.”

About the Nissan LEAF
Ever since the first Nissan LEAF rolled off the assembly line, it has been continually celebrated around the world, garnering more than 90 awards, including being named Car of the Year in Japan and Europe, not to mention winning the very prestigious World Car of the Year.

Nissan’s heritage with EVs dates back 68 years with the Tama Electric Vehicle. Nissan, which has dedicated itself to in-house research and development of the EV battery, has taken it from zinc and nickel hydride to lithium-ion. The company successfully marketed the world’s first lithium-ion battery EV in 1996 with the Prairie Joy EV. The knowledge and experience gained from this gave Nissan a big advantage over its competitors and resulted in the first mass-produced EV in history, the Nissan LEAF.

All LEAF models feature an 80kW AC synchronous motor that generates 107 horsepower and 187 lb-ft of torque, providing a highly responsive, fun-to-drive experience that consumers often expect from traditional, gasoline-powered vehicles. Unlike internal combustion engine-equipped vehicles, LEAF has no tailpipe, which means there is no emission of CO2 or other greenhouse gases. The public quick chargers can charge a LEAF from zero to 80 per cent in less than 30 minutes.
