Nissan: Nissan hosts demonstration of crafts that inspired Xmotion Concept

  • New Nissan Xmotion Concept, which made its world debut today, bridges traditional and modern Japanese craftsmanship and technologies
  • Crafts to be demonstrated during North American International Auto Show’s media days include woodworking, copper metalworking and textile weaving – some of the same techniques applied in the creation of the Xmotion instrument panel, center console and seating
  • The Xmotion Concept and the full lineup of 2018 Nissan vehicles are on display at Detroit’s Cobo Center from Saturday, Jan. 20 through Sunday, Jan. 28

DETROIT – Nissan’s new Xmotion Concept stands out from other concept vehicles with its stunning design, inspired by Nissan’s Japanese heritage.

The Xmotion Concept, which made its world debut today at the 2018 North American International Auto Show, signals the future direction of Nissan SUV design and was inspired by traditional Japanese craftsmanship. In a nod to that past, Nissan has invited craftspeople from Kyoto, Japan’s GO ON project to demonstrate several ancient techniques during the show.
The invitation to share some of the time-honored techniques that the Nissan design team studied while creating the Xmotion Concept came from Alfonso Albaisa, Nissan’s senior vice president of global design.

“I am so fortunate to have met and now collaborate with the young artists and craftsmen of GO ON,” Albaisa said. “To be able to push forward as young and modern Japanese artisans while continuing to build on their multigenerational family craft is inspirational. Their artistry was an inspiration to us as we developed the Xmotion Concept.”

GO ON is a collaboration of Kyoto craftspeople who apply traditional techniques to create inspiring new designs with international appeal. The group takes pride in pushing the boundaries of their crafts and bringing “the poetry of Japanese design” to the world.
