The 2016 racing season kicks off with a podium finish for the BMW S 1000 RR in South Africa.

Munich (DE), 25th February 2016. The 2016 racing season kicked off
with a success for the international BMW Motorrad Motorsport
community: The curtain raiser of the 2016 South African SuperGP
Champions Trophy (RSA SBK) saw the first podium finish of the year for
the BMW S 1000 RR. The season opener took place at the Red Star
Raceway (ZA) last weekend. The highest category, the SuperGP class, is
rated for the BMW Motorrad Race Trophy.

Privateer BMW racer Daryn Upton (ZA) finished the first of the two
races held in the SuperGP class in third place on the podium. In race
two, he crossed the line in fourth. Second best BMW racer was Lance
Isaacs (ZA), who claimed seventh and fifth place respectively in the
SuperGP class on his LIR BMW S 1000 RR. The third best BMW privateer
was Nicolas Grobler (ZA), who finished both races in eighth position.
Nicholas Kershaw (ZA) was tenth and ninth respectively on his RR.
Ronald Slamet (ZA) failed to finish race one and crossed the line in
12th in race two.

This season, more BMW racers and teams than ever compete in the South
African SuperGP Champions Trophy. At the season opener, no less than
ten BMW S 1000 RRs lined up in the several classes. BMW Motorrad South
Africa supports the privateer racers with a comprehensive package with
many benefits. The racers can purchase the BMW S 1000 RR at a
preferred price and are supplied with one set of tyres per rider and
race by BMW Motorrad South Africa. In addition, trainings are
organised for the teams to get acquainted with the RR, the technology
and software as well as with HP Race Parts. In the week before the
season opener, a two-day training was held with a BMW Motorrad
Motorsport engineer from Munich, who coached riders and team
technicians on site in South Africa and also supported them during the
first races. The package is completed by financial support: BMW
Motorrad South Africa pays the entry fees for the riders and takes
over part of the costs for parts purchased at the local dealers.
